The 2012 debate!!

two thousand twelve ver2 The 2012 debate!!

2012 is a disaster film, directed by Roland Emmerich and released in 2009. The film stars John CusackChiwetel EjioforAmanda PeetOliver PlattDanny GloverThandie Newton and Woody Harrelson. It was distributed by Columbia Pictures. Filming began in August 2008 in Vancouver.

The film briefly references Mayanism, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and the 2012 phenomenon in its portrayal of cataclysmic events unfolding in the year 2012. Because of solar flare bombardment the Earth’s core begins heating up at an unprecedented rate, eventually causing crustal displacement. This results in an onslaught of Doomsday event scenarios plunging the world into chaos, ranging from Californiafalling into the Pacific Ocean, the eruption of the Yellowstone National Park caldera, massive earthquakes, and Megatsunami impacts along every coast line on the Earth. The film centers around an ensemble cast of characters as they narrowly escape multiple catastrophes in an effort to reach ships in the Himalayas, along with scientists and governments of the world who are attempting to save as many lives as they can before the disasters ensue.

Will we survive?

If you haven’t heard that the world is going to end in 2012, then you’re going to get a big shock when it does! Or, you’re going to be sitting at home watching 2012 in 2013 and laughing as this movie is insanely entertaining for all the wrong reasons. 2012 is directed by renowned film director Roland Emmerich, who also directed “The day after tomorrow”. But this time round, Emmerich has kindly provided us with three years notice before the apocalypse.  So, is the world really going to end in 2012?

The most comical aspect of Sony’s marketing strategy for 2012 is that it’s got people actually believing that the world is going to end in the year 2012. It’s not so much that the Earth is destroyed, but that it’s done so thoroughly. 2012, the mother of all disaster movies (and the father, and the extended family) spends half an hour on ominous set-up scenes  and then unleashes two hours of cataclysmic special events hammering the Earth relentlessly. This oh so totally convinced the entire Savoy cinema that they had 3 years left to live.

Why 2012? Many doomsayers hang onto the idea that this ancient calendar is a ticking time bomb signaling our fast-approaching demise during the 2012 winter solstice.
According to the long count calendar of the ancient Mayans, the world ends on the 21
st of December 2012. There is zero scientific evidence of such a phenomenon occurring, but there are numerous things that threaten our species like an asteroid strike or supernova. Or something more intimate like a flu pandemic or nuclear war.

The movie review releases set about internet panic and claims that we’re all going to die in 2012. But we survived bird flu, mad cow, 9/11 and swine flu, so who says we can’t survive 2012? The panic and talk this movie has caused can all be disproved by a simple presentation of facts.

  • •Planet X (Nibiru) isn’t going to hit the Earth. It doesn’t exist. Nibiru was actually a character in the Enuma Elish, the Babylonian creation poem.
  • Apparently some aliens have been channeling information that a comet-planet will collide with the Earth – these aliens initially said the event would happen in 2003, but obviously they hadn’t synchronized their calendars as they now say 2012. Need I say more?

Ever since the Y2K and 6/6/6 (June 6, 2006) End of the World scenarios did not pan out, the scare mongers, conspiracy theorists, book sellers, and television executives have been touting the 2012 End of the World scenario. When 2012 does not happen either, I am sure they will think of something else.

Assuming that the world may end four days before Christmas, you will have plenty of extra money to throw a massive end of the world 2012 party for all of your friends.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch at Savoy.

Remember to watch 2012 in 2013 and laugh; but for those of you who beg to differ, I highly recommend you start building your spaceship, and prepare for the catastrophic events of 2012 J
